HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE!, or/oder PRIDE, VANITY, AND THE LOVE OF ONE'S SOIL AND CITY ENGLISH You might wonder why there are so many statues and frescos of a female wolf giving breast to two boys everywhere in Siena (Piazza Tolomei, Piazza Postierla, Palazzo Pubblico). We are not in Rome or are we? Now, Siena's history wants it that the wolf is a direct daughter of the famous roman wolf and that Siena was founded by Senio and Aschio, twins and sons of Remus, co-founder of Rome with his twin brother Romulus. Clearly, thus follows that Siena is Italy's second most important city, in any case prior to any other Tuscan city, such as, God may forbid, Florence for example. According to Langton Douglas, the wolf and twins have been used for the first time as a seal by the town in 1344. Whether with simple Senesian understatement or with a view to Florence is not mentioned in the history books. DEUTSCH Kenner der Geschichte Rom's moegen sich vielleicht wundern, in Siena auf Schritt und Tritt Statuen (auf der Piazza Tolomei oder der Piazza Postierla) und Hausverzierungen an Palästen (z.B. am Palazzo Pubblico) zu begegnen ,die eine Wölfin darstellt, welche zwei Knaben säugt. Nun, jeder in Siena wird auf Befragen einräumen, dass diese Wölfin von der römischen Wölfin abstamme, die nach der Überlieferung Romulus und Remus säugte. Dies ist nicht weiter verwunderlich, führt doch Siena seinen Ursprung auf ein anderes Zwillingspaar, nämlich Senio und Aschio - Söhne des Remus - zurück. Damit lässt sich weiter konstruieren, dass eben Siena, und schon gar nicht Florenz, direkt nach Rom die zweitwichtigste Stadt Italiens ist. Zum ersten Mal auf einem Stadtsiegel erschienen die Wölfin und die Zwillinge 1344. Ob diese bescheidene Selbstdarstellung der Senesen mit Blick auf die Florentiner erfolgte, ist nicht überliefert.
